The cable connects the PDA but HotSync does not initialize the PDA so that it can communicate with QuickBooks.

This is a HotSync issue.  Here are the steps I would take to troubleshoot, in order (test after each step):
  •  Make certain the connector does not have any grime or lint on it; one unit on my desk quit working but was fixed after we brushed the lint from it. 

  • Reboot the PC (a classic Windows trouble fix).

  • Reset the PDA (tap the reset button on the back);  that is just like rebooting the PC.

  • Reinstall HotSync.
